Placing it is not a point of no return, you still have a ton of game left with all areas still accessible after placing it. Plus after you place it you get the ability to warp between certain bonfires, so you really shouldn't hesitate to place it at all. It doesn't matter when. Just place it and go do whatever you wanted to do.
